Imagine this: It’s 3:00 am, a cold winter’s night. Snow is falling and the area is quietly blanketed in white. You’re nestled in, sound asleep, when suddenly you’re torn awake by the sound of the bell and a blinding light. Duty calls. You leave the warmth of your bed to head out into the cold, but you don’t complain, you don’t ask for thanks. You do your job, you save lives and protect property. You do it for free. You’re a volunteer firefighter / EMT.
Our community depends these volunteers, your neighbors, friends, and co-workers to answer the call when disaster strikes.
Fauquier County has 600 volunteers in total, and while that might initially seem impressive, divide that between 11 stations and you get an average of 54 members per station. Then, take into account the number of days per month and individual schedules. This is why the New Baltimore Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company is always looking for more dedicated members to be part of our family. Do you have what it takes to be a NBVFRC Firefighter / EMT / Driver… Volunteer?
Interested personnel must attend a Meet and Greet visit. During this visit, they are given a station tour and briefed on the types of membership, training involved and required level of commitment. If still interested, an application package is given along with a detailed review of each page. Applicants then schedule to have their fingerprints taken to initiate a background check. Once the background check is returned and the candidate is found eligible, the applicant will be presented for a vote into NBVFRC membership at the next monthly meeting. Also, after completion of the background check, the applicant will then need to complete a short HIPAA training and exam, a physical (unless seeking Administrative membership) and be processed for an ID. Once the ID has been issued, the new member can then register for the appropriate training class.
A lot of this depends on how quickly we receive the application package back from you and how quickly you make your appointment to have your fingerprints taken for the background check. The background check generally takes less than 2 weeks. Once that is complete, if you require a physical, between scheduling and receiving the results that can take another 2-4 weeks. So, as an estimate, the entire process can take approximately 1.5 months.
Yes, all volunteers, regardless of membership type must complete the background check. All volunteers will also have to undergo a check of their driving history as well.
In most cases, no. There are specific tests that must be performed. Therefore, you will be referred to a specific facility to complete the firefighter/EMT physical.
Sure, you can request a Ride-Along if you are over the age of 18. Just stop by the station and request a form.
There are four easy ways you can pick from to start the application process:
